Westport - Louisburgh-Leenane- Kylemore Abbey Tour A Tour B This tour takes us through the scenic mountainous peninsula lying between Clew Bay and
Killlary Harbour, one of the most beautiful parts of Ireland.
On leaving Westport taking the road to Louisburgh, on your right, you will enjoy breathtaking views of Clew Bay with its numerous islands, and to your left, the glory of Croagh Patrick, ''Ireland's holy Mountain'', and one of Ireland's most famous landmarks, soaring to a height of 762 metres. Towards Louisburgh there are many fine Blue Flag beaches along the coastline, Bertra, Old Head, and Carrowmore. Driving towards Leenane, you will pass between the Sheefry Hills on the left and the Mweelrea Mountains to the right. You will experience a succession of magnificent landscapes as you pass by Glencullin Lough and especially Doo Lough, a long sheet of water with mountains rising steeply from all sides.this drie is magical at sunset. at doo Lough, a small stone monument reminds us of about 4000 people who died in the region during 1847 at the height of the Great Famine after walking in vain from Louisburgh seeking assistance at a Board of Guardians meeting being held at Delphi Lodge. The next stop is Leenane, a most picturesque village on the shore of Killary Harbour, where you can stop and visit the craft centre and the Leenane Cultural Centre. On leaving Leenane you can either return to Westport or continue on to Kylemore Abbey, with it's restored Gothic Church and 6 acre Victorian Walled Garden. There is also a restaurant and craft shop for you to browse and perhaps have some lunch. |
